In the Letter to the Hebrews, we read these comforting words:
“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”
Hebrews 2:14-15
Let us feel the weight of this passage. Do we see what Jesus has done for us?
It is clear that the current secular response to Covid-19 is ultimately rooted in the fear of death. The secular narrative is propagating this ungodly fear every single day of our lives. We need not be afraid as Christians.
No Longer Slaves
As true believers we are no longer enslaved to the fear of death because of Christ. Hebrews 2:14-15 exposes the source of the one who is behind the fear of death. It is satan. That ancient serpent.
Our Lord came to destroy the devil and all his powers. To destroy satan who has the power of death, and in doing so deliver all people who through fear of death were previously enslaved.
We must hear the plain words of Scripture. If anyone has their life ultimately rooted in the fear of death, then they are enslaved to satan. As Christians, this cannot be the case because in Christ the fear of death is no longer a part of our identity. The Gospel of Eternal Life changes this for us. The fear of death has been swallowed up.
Our Solid Foundation
So, as the media propagates the fear of death, with logic and truth being set aside, we need to stay grounded as the Church; standing unshakeably on the solid foundation of Christ and His Gospel. Making it our aim that the Gospel would be the lens in which we would view this world.
We must also ask ourselves hard questions: is the fear of death getting in the way of our worship of the Lord whom we trust? Are we letting a secular narrative shape our actions instead of the words of Scripture? The Words of Eternal Life.
Let us continually check ourselves and what authority we are trusting above all. As Psalm 118:9 states:
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.”
And let us also hear the deep, comforting words of Psalm 91:
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place- the Most High, who is my refuge- no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.”
Do we actually believe this? Or are we living in a mindset of constant stress and anxiety, rooted in satanic fear that the devil alone propagates?
Instead, let us strive to live with our minds set on the things above, with Godly-fear and reverence. Let’s set our minds on the Lord Jesus Christ, trusting in Him alone, over any idol or any earthly authority.
God deliver us from the fear of death, so that we can go on to live and die for you.
The Lord’s Mercy and Forgiveness is sufficient for us. So let us repent of falling to any temptation rooted in the fear of death, because Jesus Christ has already finished the work needed for our salvation, He has truly given us Life.
O death where is your sting?
