Dear St. George’s,
I write to let you know that all church services have been cancelled today, due to inclement weather.
This has not been an easy decision, but one made in the interest of safety.
I have been up now for a few hours praying and talking on the phone, and so here are a few thoughts:
1) Jesus is Lord of the weather. In Mark 8 He speaks “Peace. Be still.” and even the wind and the waves obey Him. In other words, even this ice storm falls under His sovereign care. If our Master had so desired, He could have spoken peace to the ice storm. Instead, I have to conclude that He wants you to stay home this morning. But don’t waste this time. Curl up with your bible and read John 1:1-14. If you have children or live with other family members read it aloud to them. Pray and talk about what it means when John says, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
2) Our Lessons and Carols service was scheduled for 10:15am today. It is my favourite service of the whole year. But after talking with Debbie early this morning, we have decided to cancel. So much work and rehearsal has already been invested. Debbie, Bryan and I are working to reschedule the service for another day. We cannot promise, but we will try.
3) My final concern is more mundane, but no less real. This is the second Sunday in a row that the weather may have a direct impact on our givings. Please take time this morning to pray and ask the Lord how you ought to give on Christmas Eve.
Matthew is up, there’s a fire in my fireplace, I have a hot cup of coffee in hand (my third already!) and we are going to open John 1 and sing the songs of Zion.
God bless you and keep you safe and warm today.
